A Church Tour for Primary School Pupils

When the P3-4 pupils at an Angus Primary School visited places of worship as part of their RME curriculum, only a Mosque and a Hindu Temple were on the agenda, until one pupil suggested a trip to their church - Central Baptist, in the heart of Dundee.

The visit was organised and all eighty pupils plus teachers, support staff and parent helpers came along for a 2-hour slot, which included time for the children to have their lunch. Colin Watson, the children and families coordinator, supervised the visit as well as four other church members and staff, making sure it was inclusive and welcoming while still educating the children about key parts of Christianity and worship.

The schedule began with a song, ‘Welcome Everybody’ then a powerpoint presentation about what worship looked like and how key life events were marked in the church. Pupils were then divided into groups and taken around the church building where their guides spoke through the pulpit, baptistry, remembrance stained glass windows, artwork and Bible verses. Finally, each class was gifted with an Easter book and the time was closed in prayer.

Colin says that the informal feedback he received from teachers and helpers was very positive, and a few days later a number of letters arrived from the children expressing their thanks and saying how much they had enjoyed the visit. Praise God for the encouragement of the young pupil who invited their classmates to CBC! The church continues to pray that this will bear fruit for the Kingdom in future.
